Back in 2000, at this Python conference in Virginia, I watched this guy give a closing keynote. It was markedly different than the other geeky slideshows. It was practical, inspiration and firmly grounded in being a better person. He was genuine, energetic and funny. He also demonstrated to me that with the right strategies (like corporate support) you could do cool and respectable things in academia. I cornered him afterward and talked to him about computer music stuff for a few minutes. He could not have been nicer.

Well, I found out he died today.
