Indiana is the forgotten middle child of the union. Martin State Forest was the highlight for me.

A good alternative route - and one of the prettier more varied routes across the midwest - is to follow the Ohio river west from northern West Virginia down to Cairo, IL, and then the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers west across Missouri. So many nice bends and forested valleys. I did half of the equation, loosely following the Ohio from Parkersburg (on US50) all the way to Cairo.
