The one time that I traveled by Greyhound was pretty bad. The things the ex-cons and junkies said still kinda haunt me.

But I just noticed that with a 14 day advance ticket, one could travel from Key West, Florida to Bellingham, Washington for $109 and 4 days.

Hellish escapism on a budget.

I already knew about the Discovery Pass, but that's like $25 a day.

I found a one way ticket on Amtrak from Orlando, FL to Los Angeles, CA for $25, including dinners, it was an adventure -- I found a one way back from LA to DC to match and I had a trip together.

I actually don't mind sleeping in coach, it's better than some of the outdoor sleeping I've done.

I used to do Greyhound all the time, I decided I preferred the chinatown bus system in the east, it was the stations that really bothered me.

At least in CA, the state/county prisons use Greyhound to transport released prisoners back to the city where they were arrested. So the stations become a dumping ground for ex-cons just out of jail. And that mixes with the dealers/hookers/etc. looking for some eager customers. Needless to say, bus stations are unpleasant places.

Something about the republic of california that always confuses me. The only thing going for me with greyhound is I'm often confused with homeless and penniless when traveling by by bus. A guy in brooklyn was like "oh, you're homeless too" and gave me a hug (and I had nothing to pick from my pocket). Backpacking builds up a stink pretty quick.

Del: You're in a pretty lousy mood, huh?
Neal: To say the least.
Del: You ever travel by bus before?
[Neal shakes his head]
Del: Hmm. Your mood's probably not going to improve much.

I spent a long busride from San Diego to Las Vegas talking to a serial wife beater from Palm Dessert. He was really into ATVs too, besides the wife beating.

Ugh.

Yeah, I saw a bumper sticker like this shirt this week:

I can't remember ever not wanting to link to something more.

I kinda think Palm Dessert could be a euphemism.
