Two more groups/artists/whatever that I hated at first, but now listen to often...|
Thought she was such a hack at first listen at Branden's in 2004ish. Would now drive a whole day to see her play.
Couldn't stand Koyaanisqatsi's soundtrack at Susanna's (well, really her parents' place we were in high school) in 1996ish. I really thought he ruined an otherwise okay film. Over the next few years, he became a main influence on my approach and even work ethic toward music.
On the end of the spectrum...
Bought DJ Shadow's Endtroducing... based solely on its cover in the vinyl rap section of a Tower Records(?!?) back in 1999ish.
Didn't know what was in it cause it was shrinkwrapped and it has no text on the cover. And even if it did, I still hadn't heard of him at that point.
Like it did for many others, that album brought me firmly into a completely new perspective on music. Along with Satie, Cage, Glass and Negativland, it reinforced my many timid beliefs of what music is and it encouraged me to focus on all its possiblities, not what the critics/haters/nay-sayers have to say.
Anyway, I want everyone to have those kinds of moments in their life.
Cause shit happens, magic happens.
